Almería province saw the bulk of the arrivalsThe 119 passengers of 7 patera boats intercepted off the coast of Níjar, Almería province, last Friday, and another 36 people off Granada, brings illegal immigrant arrivals in Andalucía up to more than 2,000 so far this year. The total number since the end of June is 814, and Almería had the biggest share of that, with 498 arrivals.
The province has also been the favoured point of entry for the year so far, when almost 1,000 migrants tried to reach the Almería coast on patera boats. Figures for Granada are also high – 626 – while Cádiz province is in third place with 234 immigrant arrivals to date.
Europa Press notes that only two migrants have been arrested in Málaga.
Total numbers last year were 3,165, exactly one thousand more than the figure up until 22nd August 2009, but a 20% reduction on 2007. The news agency forecasts however that, with four months still to come of 2009, Andalucía could still see more immigrant arrivals this year than it did in 2008.
